Personal Take on Linsanity
If you haven’t heard of Jeremy Lin by now, you probably churn butter for supper and still use a well to fetch water.
Without a doubt, the story of this week in sports has revolved around Linsanity. A relatively unknown NBA player who has led the struggling New York Knicks for 4 straight wins, most notable one against the Lakers, without Carmelo or Amare. A true underdog story, considering the fact that he went undrafted into NBA, and spent most of his 1st year bouncing between the Warrior’s bench and the D-League. It was no question he belonged in the NBA, averaging a triple double (28 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists) in the D-League. But due to a lack of playing time and rookie mistakes, he never really had a chance to prove himself.
After his 1st year, the Warrior’s let Lin go in efforts to clear space to sign much needed Clipper’s center DeAndre Jordan. The Clippers matched their offer, thus making the Warrior’s lose Lin for essentially nothing. The Rockets signed Lin, but ended up letting him go shortly afterwards in efforts to sign center Samuel Dalembert. The Knicks sought opportunity in Lin due to the fact their team was tainted by injuries at the point guard position. Thus, they signed him. And in their most desperate time of need without Carmelo and Amare, and the coach’s job on the line, Lin stepped up. Big time. In their past 4 wins, Lin has averaged 28.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 8 assists. His most notable game was his most recent against the Lakers, scoring a career high 38 points.
This is why we all love sports. When one can come out of no where and exceed the expectations of everyone and shut up skeptics. But what makes Lin’s story special is not only is he a true underdog dominating, he’s doing it as an Asian American. Yes, I know race shouldn’t have nothing to do with it, but seriously, how can you not help but feel proud? He’s the first Asian American playing in the NBA since the 1940s for Christ’s sake. And he’s been fucking dominating. It’s simply impossible to factor out his ethnicity in all of this.
So, to all of those complaining that people just love him because of his race or that they’re tired of hearing about him: Who fucking cares? Let us enjoy something completely rare: An Asian American in the spot light. A sports spot light. I have no idea why people are even nit picking at these sort of things in the first place, and not appreciating such a great phenomenon right now. Can we all just simply enjoy what’s going on right now without having to bring in the negative and the analyzing? So what if he ends up not being consistent? So what if he ends up dying down? So what if he’s not going to be good anymore once Carmelo and Amare come back? Who the fuck cares, man. Let’s live in the moment with this.
Bring on the fucking Linsanity.
